How to update the firmware on your C-Series motorized shade

Firmware updates are important to ensure performance, reliability and compatibility.

This article describes two ways to apply firmware updates.

Via Mado Home using Bluetooth for transportation

  • Best practice to apply an initial update to get the latest firmware for the smoothest installation experience.

  • Also applicable for shades that are not configured on a Thread network.

Via Matter

  • For shades that are already configured on a Thread network, with permissions set to automatically download and apply firmware updates to devices on the network, no user intervention is needed. Updates are automatically applied.

  • For the very first batch of Mado Shades produced, it is also critical to update shades at least once to ensure they are Matter-certified.

  • Matter-certified shades on a network, with permissions set to automatically deliver updates, do not need any user intervention for future updates. New updates are automatically applied by the Smart Home system and infrastructure.

  • If you are not setting up Shades on a Thread network, then it is important to check for firmware updates via the Mado Home app periodically.

Firmware Update Delivery Method

When applicable

How it works

Mado Home App

  • For shades that are NOT already on a Thread network

  • For early batch shades (Kickstarter customers) which require a special firmware update to activate Matter-over-Thread networking.

  • Direct Bluetooth (BLE) connection between Mado Home App and shade

  • One shade updated at a time. Shade has to be placed in BLUETOOTH pairing mode.

Thread Network (Automatic)

  • All shades that are on a Thread Network

  • Once networked, shades will always stay updated on the latest version of firmware provided by Mado Dynamic.

Firmware Update via the Mado Home App

Before you begin make sure:

  • Your shade is installed and responds to the remote

  • your phone has the Mado Home app installed

  • your shade appears online in the Mado Home app

  • the shade has sufficient battery charge (solar or USB-C charging if needed)

  • Bluetooth is enabled on your phone

Do not begin a firmware update if the shade has a low battery.

Step 1: Make the Shade discoverable via Bluetooth (BLE Pairing mode).

  1. On the shade to be updated, press and hold the PROG button until the LED starts blinking blue.

Step 2: Open the Mado Home app and check for available updates

  • Select the Add a Shade menu option

  • Start the Firmware Update

If your shade is up-to-date, you can tap the ‘←’ to quit out of the Update process.

Step 3: Install the update

  1. Start the update from the app.

  2. Keep your phone nearby during the process.

  3. Wait until the update completes.

The shade may move slightly or become temporarily unresponsive during installation. This is normal.

Step 4: Confirm the update is complete

After installation:

  • verify the shade responds normally to controls

  • confirm the device shows as connected in the app

  • check that no additional updates are pending

Important

  • It is a good practice to plug in power via the USB-c port, to eliminate the risk of interrupted updates. Do not remove power from the shade during an update

  • Do not close the app until installation finishes

  • Keep your phone within range until the process completes

If the update does not finish successfully, reopen the Mado Home app and try again. If the issue continues, contact support for assistance.

Automatic Firmware Updates via Matter-over-Thread

  • Review your Hub (enabled with Matter and Thread) provider’s documentation on how to opt-in for automatic updates to connected Thread devices.

  • Example screen from Apple Home
