Outside mounting is used when the shade is installed above or outside the window frame instead of inside it.
You might choose an outside mount if your window frame is too shallow for an inside mount, if there are obstructions inside the frame, or if you want the shade to extend beyond the edges of the window for better light coverage.
With an outside mount, the shade attaches directly to the included mounting brackets. The TrueFit Bar is not used in this installation.
Before you begin
Make sure:
the mounting surface is clean and dry
you have the included mounting brackets and screws
the shade has already been trimmed using your fit number, if required
you have a level and screwdriver ready
you have a ladder tall enough to see above the shade and mark bracket positions aligned with the clips
Use a stable ladder or step stool and make sure it is positioned securely before marking or drilling.
Installing the brackets
Step 1: Choose the mounting position
Hold the shade above the window and decide where it will sit.
Most installations place the shade just above the top of the window frame and extend slightly beyond both sides. This improves coverage and reduces light gaps.
Check that the shade will hang evenly and clear any trim or obstacles.
Step 2: Mark bracket locations
Hold the shade in position.
Use a level to make sure it is straight.
Look at the back of the headrail and identify where the clips are located. Mark bracket positions so they align with those clip points.
Small and Medium shades use 2 brackets, aligned with the two clips
Large and XL shades use 3 brackets, aligned with all three clips
NOTE: Each bracket must line up with a clip so the shade can snap into place.
Step 3: Install the mounting brackets
Align each bracket with the marked positions.
Secure the brackets using the included screws.
Tighten until the brackets are firmly attached.
Check that both brackets are level before continuing.
Trimming your shade to fit
For an outside mount, you are sizing the shade to cover the window, not fit inside it.
Measure the width of your window opening.
Add 1 to 2 inches on each side for coverage.
If you prefer a more minimal look, use less overhang. If you want better light blocking, use more.
This gives you the total width for your shade.
Once you have that number:
Extend the TrueFit Bar to match that width
Use that number as your fit number when trimming
Refer to the Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions on trimming your shade.
This extra width helps reduce light gaps and improves coverage.
Attach and confirm the shade
Lift the shade into position.
Align the headrail with the installed brackets.
Press the shade into place until it snaps into the brackets.
Check that both sides are fully seated.
Apply light downward pressure on the top of the shade to confirm it is secure.
Make sure:
The shade sits level
All brackets are fully engaged
What to expect next
Once the shade is mounted, continue with the remaining setup steps in the main installation guide.
